New Years Day - Edinburgh

Our wonderful feast on a Reclette - like a little hotplate with a grill underneath. We each cooked our own! We had chicken, beef schnitzel, capsicum, corn, pineapple, onion, salamis, tomato, cheeses and potatoe. Very tasty! The pics below appear pretty hazy, thats because we ate in the lounge and filled the place up with smoke! Was blimin fantastic! So this is Graeme's flat, with his flatmates Andrea and her partner Alan.
It was about 9:30pm that the Royal Street Party had been cancelled :( The winds were up to 76mph and the rain was bucketing down. Would have made a pretty miserable party. Because of the winds they were unable to let off the 8 tonne of fireworks - however they did light a few and at midnight we supped a glass of bubbles and watched the 5 minute show from Graeme's bedroom window.

We had a fantastic sleep in this morning and woke to a beautiful clear blue day ... which quickly caved in and started persisting down within a matter of about 20 minutes! Today was our castle tour day. We spent a bit of time wandering around trying to find a place for breakfast - we had to build up our strength for the climb up the hill *again*.

This is the tower where the scots crown jewels are kept. We wandered around the castle for about 2 hours - quite fascinating stuff and we were fortunate enough to be there when the canon was fired at 1:00pm - it was pretty loud. The cloud cleared a bit in between blustery rain showers and we were able to get a few view type photos which was pretty cool.

After leaving the castle we wandered down the Royal Mile - the street leading up the castle. We stopped at the The Whisky Heritage Centre - Craig purchased 6 new whisky bottles for his minature collection - could have spent a bloody fortune in that shop, actually we did really hehe. We also stopped for the obligatory afternoon drinkies and carried on meandering back into town.
This is some of the carnival set up in the Princes Street gardens - including the ice skating rink! Hoping to do that tomorrow morning.
Last pic of the night was of the castle lit up, below it are the trees lit up with beautiful blue/purple lights - its quite a magnificent place during winter carnival at night.

This pic was taken at about 4:30pm - its dark already!!!!! Freaky - we still cant get used to that.

We're back at the flat now, just chilling out for a bit before heading out to the pub and finding a meal. Tomorrow morning the boys are planning on going to the Edinburgh Dungeons - Helena is going to do some wandering, shopping and maybe get her skating adventure in!
We are on a train back to London about 2:00pm, then heading back to Pete's - the time is just flying past too quickly!
